Objective Owner

Last updated:

What is Objective Owner?

An Objective Owner is the individual (usually a department leader or team lead) accountable for achieving an Objective and orchestrating the Key Results underneath it. They are responsible for ensuring that the objective is clear, the key results are well-defined, the team understands their role, and progress is tracked.

The Objective Owner's responsibilities include: communicating the objective to their team, breaking it down into actionable initiatives, removing blockers, tracking progress through check-ins, and reporting status to leadership. They should have both the authority to make decisions affecting the objective and the accountability when it underperforms.

In well-functioning OKR systems, Objective Owners are empowered to decide how to achieve their goals, but not to change the goals mid-cycle without explicit approval. This balance ensures both autonomy and alignment. An Objective Owner might be a VP of Product responsible for a company-level objective, or a team lead responsible for a team-level objective.
