What is Accountability?

Accountability in the OKR framework means assigning clear ownership and responsibility for achieving specific goals. When everyone knows who is accountable for what, and those people are empowered to make decisions and access resources, accountability drives execution and results.

Without clear accountability, OKRs remain aspirational — nice-to-haves rather than commitments. With accountability, they become drivers of action. Each Objective has an owner (usually a team lead or department head) and each Key Result has a metric owner. These people are answerable for results in check-ins, retrospectives, and leadership reviews.

Accountability doesn't mean punishment for missing goals — especially aspirational OKRs where missing is expected. Rather, it means having a clear line of sight to who is responsible for each goal, enabling quick problem-solving and learning. In healthy OKR cultures, accountability pairs with psychological safety: people feel safe taking risks and reporting setbacks because the focus is on learning, not blame.
