Roofshot

What is Roofshot?

A Roofshot is an OKR that aims for significant but achievable improvement — think 10-30% better than the current state. Unlike moonshots, roofshots are expected to be completed at or near 100%. They represent goals where the path to success is understood, even if it requires hard work and discipline.

The term contrasts with "moonshot" to describe goals that are ambitious within realistic bounds. A roofshot for revenue might be "Grow ARR from $5M to $6.5M," when you currently grow at 20% annually. The equivalent moonshot might be "Grow ARR from $5M to $15M." Roofshots are the reliable workhorses that keep the business moving forward predictably.

Roofshots form the backbone of most OKR systems. They ensure steady progress on important areas while moonshots drive breakthrough thinking. A recommended mix suggests that about 70% of OKRs should be roofshots (committed OKRs) with 30% being moonshots (aspirational OKRs). This balance maintains reliability while fostering ambition.
