The 4 Disciplines of Execution

Last updated:

What is The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX)?

The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) is a methodology for achieving goals amidst the "whirlwind" of daily urgent tasks. The four disciplines are: Focus on the Wildly Important (define your most critical goal), Act on Lead Measures (focus on activities that drive the outcome), Keep a Compelling Scoreboard (make progress visible), and Create a Cadence of Accountability (regular check-ins).

The parallels with OKRs are striking. A Wildly Important Goal is similar to an Objective — it defines the most critical outcome to achieve. Lead Measures correspond to leading indicators or the activities that drive Key Results. The Compelling Scoreboard echoes OKR progress tracking and dashboards. The Cadence of Accountability mirrors weekly check-ins where you review progress and commit to next actions.

Where 4DX differs from OKRs is in its emphasis on focus and execution discipline. 4DX strongly advocates for no more than 1-2 Wildly Important Goals at any time, arguing that the more goals you have, the less you achieve on each. OKRs typically allow 3-5 Objectives per cycle. Both frameworks benefit from each other: use 4DX's discipline of radical focus to write fewer, better OKRs.
