Aspirational OKR

What is Aspirational OKR?
An Aspirational OKR (also called a "moonshot OKR" or "stretch OKR") is a goal deliberately set beyond what you believe is fully achievable. The purpose is to push boundaries, encourage creative thinking, and achieve more than you would with conservative targets. Achieving 60-70% of an aspirational OKR is considered a strong outcome.
Aspirational OKRs are what make the OKR framework unique compared to traditional goal-setting approaches. While traditional goal-setting emphasizes achievability, aspirational OKRs embrace the possibility of partial completion. The philosophy is that aiming to "grow revenue by 300%" and achieving 210% is better than aiming to "grow revenue by 50%" and achieving exactly 50%.
To use aspirational OKRs effectively, clearly label them as such — both for yourself and anyone you share your OKRs with. This prevents the frustration of "failing" at goals that were designed to be stretch targets. When scoring aspirational OKRs, apply the 0.6-0.7 success threshold rather than expecting 1.0. And always pair aspirational OKRs with committed OKRs to maintain a balance between ambition and reliability.
