Cross-Functional Alignment

What is Cross-Functional Alignment?
Cross-Functional Alignment is the practice of identifying and resolving dependencies between OKRs across different teams or departments to ensure they support each other and don't conflict. In organizations with siloed teams, misalignment is common — Product builds features that Sales can't sell, or Engineering optimizes for speed while Quality prioritizes stability.
The process of cross-functional alignment includes: mapping dependencies (which teams depend on which?), sequencing work (what needs to happen first?), resolving conflicts (which priorities win when there's a tradeoff?), and establishing communication (how often do dependent teams sync?).
In well-run OKR systems, cross-functional alignment happens early during planning, not as an afterthought. Teams map their dependencies during planning and flag high-risk items early. Cross-team check-ins happen regularly (weekly or biweekly) for dependent work. When a dependency-dependent OKR goes off-track, escalation paths are clear. This intentional coordination prevents surprises and ensures teams can support each other's success.
